What connecting Wix does#

PilotDeck researches, drafts and queues content for review. A CMS connection is the last hop: once you approve a draft, PilotDeck sends it to your CMS for you. For Wix, that means a post in your Wix Blog. The example below uses a PilotDeck site named pilotdeck-testwebsite.

Two values

You give PilotDeck a Wix API key and your Wix site ID. PilotDeck finds the post author on its own, so you never type a member ID.

Drafts first

The default publish mode is Draft only. Posts arrive in your Wix Blog as drafts, so nothing goes live until you publish it in Wix.

Wix rich format

Wix Blog has no HTML field. PilotDeck converts each article into Wix's rich content format, keeping headings, paragraphs, lists and images.

Before you start#

You needDetails
A Wix site with the Wix Blog appThe Blog app must be added to your Wix site. Without it there is no blog to post to.
At least one site memberWix requires every blog post to have a member as its author. The site owner counts as a member on their own, so you usually do not need to add anyone. Add a member only if author resolution fails.
A Wix account loginAccess to the account that owns the site, so you can open the API Keys Manager.
A PilotDeck loginPermission to change integrations for the site. Without it the Connect button is unavailable.
API key permissionsBlog with read and write access, and Members with read access. The key needs both. Blog alone is not enough, because PilotDeck looks up a site member to use as the author.
Treat the API key like a password. Anyone who has it can read and write your blog through the Wix API. Never paste it into chat, tickets or screenshots. Every credential in this guide is masked.

Sign in to Wix and add the Blog app#

You

Open wix.com and log in with the account that owns the site. Enter your email, then your password. Wix may also offer Google, Facebook or Apple sign-in.

The Wix log in page. The email is a placeholder in this screenshot.
Email and password filled in. The email is a placeholder and the password shows dots.

You land on Sites, which lists your websites. Pick the site you want to publish to, or click Create New Site to make one. If you create a new site, choose Blog when Wix asks what the site is about. Wix then offers the Wix Blog app, so add it.

The Sites page. The site name is masked in this screenshot.

Open the site's dashboard and check that Blog appears in the left menu. That confirms the Wix Blog app is installed. The site also needs at least one member to act as the post author. The site owner counts, so a new site works without extra setup.

2

Create an API key#

You

In Wix, open your account's API Keys page (manage.wix.com/account/api-keys). It lists the keys you have already generated and shows your Account ID. Click Generate API Key.

The API Keys page. The key token and the Account ID are hidden in this screenshot.

Give the key a recognisable Name, such as PilotDeck. Leave Sites on All sites, or choose Specific sites and select the one you use. Under Permissions, open All site permissions > See all and tick:

  • Wix Blog: manage the blog's posts and categories
  • Wix Contacts & Members: read the site's members
Both permission groups ticked. Leave every other group unticked.

Click Generate Key. Wix asks you to Verify your account: it emails a 6-digit code to the address on your Wix account. Click Send Code, enter the code, then click Verify & Generate Key. The code is valid for 10 minutes, and Wix allows 20 key changes per day.

Wix now shows the key once. Click Copy token and keep it until step 5.

The one-time token dialog. The token is masked in this screenshot.
Copy it once. If you lose the key, generate a new one and replace it in PilotDeck. Never paste it into chat, tickets or screenshots.
3

Copy your site ID#

You

Open your site's dashboard in Wix. The site ID is the long identifier in the dashboard's address, right after /dashboard/. You can also find it under Settings > Business info. It is a GUID: five groups of hexadecimal characters separated by hyphens. Copy it.

4

Open Integrations in PilotDeck#

You

In PilotDeck, make sure the correct site is selected in the top-left site switcher (here, pilotdeck-testwebsite). Go to Settings > Integrations and find the CMS Connection card. With nothing connected it reads "No CMS connected".

Click Wix (API key and site ID). The form asks for Wix API Key and Wix Site ID.

The Wix form: setup notes on the left, the Wix API Key and Wix Site ID fields, optional category and publish mode on the right.
5

Enter the values and choose a mode#

You
  1. Paste the key into Wix API Key. The field shows dots, so you cannot read it back.
  2. Paste the GUID into Wix Site ID.
  3. Category is optional. Wix categories need internal IDs, so PilotDeck sends your tags and category as Wix hashtags instead.
  4. Pick a Publish mode. Start with Draft only (see Publish modes).
6

Test, then connect#

PilotDeck

Click Test connection first. PilotDeck checks the key against Wix without saving anything. You should see "Looks good, credentials work."

A passing test. The key shows dots and the site ID is a placeholder.

Then click Connect. PilotDeck looks up a site member to use as the default author. A "CMS connected." message appears, and the card turns green with an ACTIVE badge.

Connected. The card shows ACTIVE, the publish mode, an optional category, the test buttons and Disconnect. The signing secret in the lavender box is masked.
Signing secret box. After you connect, PilotDeck shows a one-time Save this signing secret box. None of the steps in this guide use it, because the API key and site ID are what link the two. You can dismiss the box.
The test fails outright only when Wix rejects the key (not valid, or missing permission). If Wix accepts the key but no member can be found, the test still passes and publishing fails later. See Troubleshooting.
7

Verify with a test post#

Verify

On the connected card, click Send test draft. You should see "Test draft created." PilotDeck sends a sample article to your Wix Blog as a draft. In the Wix dashboard go to Blog > Posts and open the Drafts tab.

The card after Send test draft.
The sample article in the Drafts tab of Blog > Posts, sent from PilotDeck.
Send test live publishes the sample for real, so use it only on a site where that is fine. Delete test posts in your Wix Blog afterwards.
Done. Approved content for this site now goes to your Wix Blog in the mode you chose.

Publish modes#

ModeWhat happensWhen to use it
Draft only (default)Posts are created in your Wix Blog as drafts. You publish them in Wix when ready.Recommended while you learn the flow, or when someone reviews on the Wix side.
Publish livePosts are created and published, so they appear on your live blog.Once you trust the output and your review step happens in PilotDeck.
Switching modes asks you to confirm. After a post is live, PilotDeck cannot turn it back into a draft. Change or remove it in your Wix Blog.

The link PilotDeck stores depends on the mode. A published post gets its live page address. A draft has no public address yet, so PilotDeck links to the post's edit page in your Wix dashboard instead.

What reaches Wix#

Wix Blog only accepts its own rich content format, so PilotDeck converts the article before sending it. The converter keeps the structure and drops the decoration.

ContentResult in Wix
Headings, levels 1 to 6Kept as headings
Paragraphs and quotesKept as paragraphs. A quote becomes a plain paragraph.
Bulleted and numbered listsKept as lists
Images with a full http or https addressKept as images with their alt text
Bold, italic and links inside textFlattened to plain text. The words stay, the formatting and link do not.
Anything else, such as tables and embedded scriptsNot carried over as such. Only the text of blocks it recognises is kept.

Each post also carries the following where the article provides it:

  • Title, cut to 200 characters, and the meta description as the excerpt, cut to 500 characters.
  • Tags and category as hashtags.
  • SEO title, description and social image tags, plus FAQ structured data when the article has an FAQ. The FAQ also appears as visible text in the post.
  • A featured image, best effort. If Wix rejects the image, PilotDeck retries without it and the post still goes through.
  • The author. A site member whose name matches the PilotDeck author is used. If none matches, the post uses the default member and an author box in the post text carries the details.
PilotDeck does not set a custom URL slug, a scheduled time or Wix categories on Wix posts. Wix assigns the slug.

Disconnecting#

On the connected card click Disconnect and confirm. Approved content stops publishing to Wix right away. This cannot be undone, but you can reconnect by repeating steps 4 to 6. To fully remove access, also delete the API key in the Wix API Keys Manager.

Troubleshooting#

"Test connection" fails

Check that the key has both Blog (read and write) and Members (read) permissions, that you pasted the whole key with no spaces, and that the site ID belongs to the same Wix site the key was created for.

Wix says an author is required

PilotDeck shows that Wix requires an author but the site has no members. Add a site member in Wix, then try again. The site owner normally counts, so this is rare.

The post fails with a permission error

Wix answered with a permission refusal. Open the API Keys Manager and confirm the key still has Blog and Members permissions. Generate a new key if needed and reconnect.

The post is rejected as invalid

Wix refused the content (status 400 or 422). Check that the Wix Blog app is installed on the site and that the site ID is correct.

Wix rate limit or server error

Wix answered with a rate limit (429) or a server error (5xx). Wait a few minutes and send again.

My formatting or links are missing

Bold, italic and links are flattened to plain text by the converter. Add them in the Wix editor after the draft arrives. See What reaches Wix.

The wrong person is shown as author

PilotDeck matches a Wix member by nickname or full name. With no match, the default member is used. Make the member name in Wix match the PilotDeck author name.

The draft has no public link

Wix gives a post a public address only once it is published. Drafts link to the edit page in your Wix dashboard instead.
